Travertine tile cleaning is slightly more complicated than other tile cleaning. For regular cleaning, use a mild, neutral pH soapless cleaner mixed with water. Use an automatic scrubber with a disc brush for deep cleaning travertine. Stain removal depends on the type of product that made the stain.
Travertine tiles are quarried from limestone deposits found near mineral hot springs. It is used as wall cladding, on floors and in outdoor walkways and patios. Travertine requires sealing because it is naturally porous and rapidly absorbs any spills across its surface. After installing travertine tiles or just after wax removal, you need to seal travertine immediately to protect it. Add a neutral or alkaline-based sealant to protect the travertine in its natural state or when polished to a high sheen. Avoid using acid-based cleaners and wipe up spills containing natural acids to avoid etching the travertine.
1
Remove wax, if your travertine has it, with a non-acidic wax remover solution. After removing the wax, clean the travertine with an akaline or neutral-based cleaner. If no wax is present, just clean the travertine with the appropriate cleaner.
2
Dry the tile surfaces with a microfiber or cotton cloth when the travertine is clean, soil- and wax-free. Porous travertine might require up to 72 hours to dry completely.
3
Apply an even coat of the travertine sealer using a soft cloth or lambswool applicator, working in small sections. Porous travertine will require more sealer than polished travertine. Use the grout lines as borders for your work sections.

Wait for the first coat to dry completely before adding a second coat of sealer. Remove any excess sealer to avoid streaks. Buff the travertine sealer using a microfiber or soft all-cotton cloth.
Things You Will Need
- Non-acidic wax remover
- Neutral-based cleaner
- Microfiber cloth
- Travertine sealer
- Soft cloth or lambswool applicator
Tip
- To correct streaking problems, add more sealer to the tiles to reactivate it and dry buff to remove streaks and excess sealer. Maintain travertine tiles by cleaning them with a neutral solution and warm water. Use a mop equipped with a microfiber head to clean travertine tiles on the floor. Do not let the solution dry on the floor; use another dry mop or microfiber cloth to remove cleaners and dry the tiles.

- Water-based sealers might take longer to dry, so don't let the sealer puddle, as this may stain some lighter travertine tiles.
